The Study of an Object: First Things

From 19 April to June 2011, The Seweryn Udziela Etnographic Musuem in Kraków, the Town Hall building, Plac Wolnica 1
We offer an encounter with several objects which found their way to the Etnographic Museum in Kraków in the first ten years of its operation (1911-1921). The key in selecting the presented objects, apart from the time frame, is the donor: well known, lesser known or completely anonymous people who donating to the Museum their entire collections or single items, have become the co-makers of the century-old history of the Etnographic Museum in Kraków. Each item is the starting point for a story. About the courage of imagination, scientific passions, travels, discoveries, distant expeditions... About wartime wandering, exile, forced emigration...Fascination with art, enchantment with the form of exeptional and ordinary objects... About curiosity about the world, exploring its diversity, inspiring meetings, opening new horizons and attempts to preserve various testimonies of our lives. It is probably a good start for a story on the establishment of the Etnographic Museum in Kraków. The study of an object is a new way of communing with the museum collection. We encourage you to focus on indyvidual objects and to examine them closely. We would like to create a type of work-shop where in silence and contemplation thoughts worth recording and remembering will be born.
