Beautiful and Useful

An Art Nouveau honey vessel in the shape of a bee, a vase made of chestnut leaves, a luxury salt-cellar from Tiffany’s with metallic shine, a tobacco kit shaped as a cubist sculpture – these are only some of the unique items collected at the new exhibition entitled “Beautiful and Useful. Art Nouveau and Art Deco Table Settings” open in the Wieliczka Saltworks Castle from June 22, 2012 to September 2, 2012.
It will definitely be appreciated by lovers of beautiful items, because through the examples of Art Nouveau and Art Deco table settings it shows the birth of modern design. On display, there are exhibits intended for every-day use, distinguished by excellent forms or unique decorations. The exhibition presents a wide spectrum of products from Polish and foreign manufacturing centres, executed in various artistic techniques. There are works of largest international companies with leading positions in glass, ceramic and metal production, such as Émile Gallé from Nancy in France, Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik and Louis Comfort Tiffany from New York.

Accomplishments of Polish designers and producers from Warsaw, Cracow and Poznań are also represented in large numbers. Antique table settings are shown in a wide context of other elements typical for interior decoration at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century and the inter-war period, including furniture, rugs and sculptures.
