The Charms of the Wieliczka Museum

Post-event exhibition of works created during the 12th International Plein-Air of Disabled Artists in the Cracow Saltworks Museum Wieliczka. Venue: Museum exhibition in the mine at a depth of 442 ft to 31st December 2011
Impressive horse-gears, unique salt specimens, mysterious underground chambers, miners at work, original saltcellars, the Saltworks Castle at different times of day and night, the Gothic Hall are the subjects of a selected few of 112 works presented at The Charms of the Wieliczka Museum exhibition organized by the Cracow Saltworks Museum Wieliczka and the Foundation of Disabled People's Art.

The paintings were created during a two-day plein-air on June 30th and July 1st, 2011 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of foundation of the Cracow Saltworks Museum Wieliczka. Annually, the artists of the Foundation of Disabled People's Art in Cracow were given total freedom (in terms of concept/ in selection of objects and technique) to illustrate the underground exposition of the museum, as well as the Saltworks Castle.

The created works dazzle with huge attention to the tiniest details of mining machines, tools, mine interiors, saltcellars, knight armors, and castle halls. The exhibition includes also pieces characteristic for abstract art in which artists took the liberty to personalize the painted items, giving them a whole new look. Some paintings are examples of naive art which through bright and warm colors portrays the underground and the castle in a fable-like style. The presented paintings are differentiated not only in terms of portrayed objects but also due to their technique (there are pastels, watercolors, pencil drawings, oil paintings, and collages), which additionally adds to the individuality of works.

The second part of the underground exhibition presents the best pieces of artists rewarded in the contests organized throughout the 20 years of activity of the Foundation of Disabled People's Art. During this time the Foundation organized 11 biennials on different subjects which contributed to presenting disabled artist and their works to a wider audience. The 20th anniversary of the Foundation coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Museum, which is just another reason for celebration.
