The Geology Museum of the PAN Institute of Geological Sciences is home to the geological collections accumulated since 1865, initially by the Physiographical Commission created by the Krakow Society for the Sciences, then later by the Geological Department of the Skills Academy, and then after 1921 by the Nature Museum of the Polish Skills Academy. After the creation of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in 1954, the geological portion of the collections were in the care of the Geological-Stratigraphical Laboratory, from which today's research centre and museum were born.

Today the museum continues to accumulate collections covering several branches of geology, namely: paleontological collections (including paleobotanical), mineralogical (including the collections of Antoni Waga and Ignacy Domeyko from South America - nineteenth century) and lithological (including the largest collections of meteorites in Poland with 333 specimens), which are available for study and public information purposes.

The permanent exhibition entitled "The geological construction of the Krakow region" is of a popular science nature, prepared for visitors of varying levels of knowledge of geological questions.  Visitors will find here both general and specific information about the geology of the Krakow area, concerning the most important types of stone and how they formed, fossils, tectonic questions, sculptures, karsts, and the history of the geological construction of the Krakow area. The paleontological portion contains the most important fossils of the flora and fauna as well as trace fossils of the Krakow area.
